A Tune of Two Cities

Classic literature impacts with its concepts and morals. If we reduce literature to its sounds made from words, what impacts does it produce then? Symbolist poets used sounds of words rather than meanings to create literature. This is a reverse-Symbolist attempt to peek beneath human perception of meaningful sounds.

Each letter in the alphabet is assigned a value, to which then is converted into a note on the keyboard.

Original Literature is then translated into numerical sentences.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only." - A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens 87 T06 774 1467 25 78046, 87 T06 774 T2567 25 78046, 87 T06 774 064 25 T86320, 87 T06 774 064 25 522E8671466, 87 T06 774 43227 25 14E845, 87 T06 774 43227 25 8125438E870, 87 T06 774 640621 25 E8677, 87 T06 774 640621 25 305T1466, 87 T06 774 635816 25 7234, 87 T06 774 T81745 25 3463085, T4 703 4945077816 145254 86, T4 703 1277816 145254 86, T4 T454 0EE 62816 385427 72 740941, T4 T454 0EE 62816 385427 774 27745 T00 -- 81 67257, 774 345823 T06 62 505 E8T4 774 3546417 345823, 7707 6204 25 876 12868467 08772587846 81686743 21 876 13816 54248943, 525 6223 25 525 498E, 81 774 68345E07894 346544 25 2203058621 21E0.

The numerical sequence then is translated into musical notes according to assigned values. Punctuations become rests.

This is one of many possibilities of reimagining the famous opening paragraph of the book.

Upon first listen, I found it strange and familiar at the same time. The recurring motif becomes attaches itself to my long term memory. Somehow the sounds seem to produce a strangeness reflected in the original text, or perhaps that is wishful thinking.
